The "Watu Kandang Matesih" site consists of a stone enclosure, namely a group of stones (menhirs) arranged in the form of an interring bracelet formation. This site is located in Ngasinan, Karangbangun, Matesih, Karanganyar Regency, in a rice field that is passed by the Samin River and is on the side of the highway leading to Mangadeg and Tawangmangu. To the east of this site are Mount Bangun and Mount Banoman, which, by the nature of the megalithic heritage, confirm that most sites face the mountain. In 1967, archaeologist Soekatno reported the existence of this site, containing megalithic rocks. A reconnaissance survey was done to confirm the authenticity. The survey continued in July 1968 with mapping, delineation, photography, and trial excavations. Further excavations were carried out in August 1969, then in 1977. The stone enclosure structure at the Matesih Site consists of several variations in shape, such as rectangular, oval and irregular. Some stones are quite large (with a length or diameter of more than 1.5 meters) and some are small (less than 1.0 meters). This site is estimated to have originated from the old megalithic period nearly 5,000 years ago and continued to develop until the XII century AD based on existing findings. The arranged stones have astronomical purposes as well, another research reported.
View on Googleit's free to enter. there is small area to park the car, but the gate was not opened. you can see a lot of stones formation, many even extended out of the complex which is bordered by fence. they said they are arranged in correlation with the belief that souls go to the hills and mountains.
