Wasn’t really active when we went to see sunrise but still a breathtaking experience. You can see the tiniest bit of red on the night photo

Gunung Merapi was one of the most memorable experiences from my time in Indonesia, combining adventure, scenery and surprisingly professional photography into a single outing. Taking the jeep up the slopes of the volcano was an experience in itself, with the rugged terrain, volcanic landscape and ever-present silhouette of Merapi creating an atmosphere that felt both dramatic and otherworldly. The views were spectacular, particularly in the early morning light when the mountain seemed to dominate the entire horizon. What really elevated the experience, however, were the guides. Beyond navigating the terrain, they seemed to know every angle, viewpoint and camera trick imaginable. They helped stage and capture a series of genuinely epic photographs that looked far more cinematic than anything I could have taken on my own. Some of the shots felt as though they belonged on a travel magazine cover rather than in a personal photo album. Between the jeep adventure, the imposing presence of Merapi and the incredible photography, the experience delivered not just great memories but some truly unforgettable images to take home as well.

Mount Merapi, located on the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta, is one of Indonesia’s most active and iconic volcanoes. Known as the “Mountain of Fire,” it has erupted regularly for centuries, leaving behind a dramatic landscape. Despite its volatility, Merapi holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Javanese people, often regarded as a sacred guardian. I had the opportunity to hike Merapi through the New Selo route in 2014. This path offers a unique perspective of the mountain, taking trekkers through lush forests and rugged terrain, all while providing an excellent view of the surrounding landscape. Along the way, you’ll pass remnants of previous eruptions, with hardened lava flows and volcanic ash fields marking the mountain’s powerful history. The hike is challenging, especially nearing the summit, where the air thins and the terrain becomes steeper. However, the reward is immense. Reaching the top, I was able to witness the breathtaking sunrise and panoramic views of Central Java. The 2014 photo I took during the climb captures the surreal beauty of Merapi, with its smoldering crater and vast volcanic landscapes stretching out below. What struck me most during my hike was not just the mountain’s raw power, but the resilience of the local communities. Despite Merapi’s frequent eruptions, people continue to live and work in its shadow. Visiting Merapi is not only an adventure but a reminder of nature’s strength and the enduring spirit of the people who call this land home.

Very impressive. This is a grand spectacle. At the same time, you feel a sense of fear, danger, and enthusiasm for the outgoing force of nature, which no human can overcome. This performance from the depths of the earth will leave an indelible mark in the consciousness of any living being! Primordial animal fear and curiosity are present and possess you, which push you to adventure and approach the very center of this powerful force! In 1930, the eruption killed about 1,300 people. During the eruption in 1974, 2 villages were destroyed, and in 1975 - a large village and five bridges, 29 people died. In addition, several cases of deaths of tourists and volcanologists have been recorded, whose graves can be found right on the volcano. Another eruption occurred in March-April 2014. In February 2020, another volcanic eruption took place. At the same time, the ash column rose by 2 km, and volcanologists announced a three-kilometer prohibited zone around the crater. The last eruption was recorded in August 2021. The volcano released hot ash into the air, and lava flowed rapidly down the slopes. The sounds of the eruption could be heard several kilometers away

Mt Merapi (2274m) is a popular destination for mountain trekking and climbing especially during long weekend. To climb you will pass 3 posts and spends around 4-5 hours to reach the top from base-camp Selo. Best time to climb is during the dry season.
