A recent lunch at Ootoya Lotte Avenue reminded me exactly why this style of japanese dining hits a completely different comfort note compared to other sushi chain restaurants. While popular chains focus heavily on vibrant sushi platters and modern fusion rolls, Ootoya specializes in teishoku, traditional set meal. This time we ordered the Hokke Shio Koji set menu, a well-balanced wholesome tray complete with a main dish of charcoal-grilled fish marinated in koji (koji means fermented rice malt, as it says on the menu), gohan, miso soup, and side dishes. It was highly recommended by the server, according to her it's often out of stock. We usually ordered salmon or saba shio, so hokke is a fantastic alternative that brings a completely different texture and flavor profile to the table. Hokke is a white-fleshed fish, much more delicate than salmon making it lighter on the palate while still maintaining a beautiful, juicy tenderness when grilled. Comparing to my usual Saba Shio set order, Hokke is milder and significantly less oily, though it still has enough natural fat to stay incredibly moist on the plate. It's split open before grilling, to let it develop a slightly crispy skin and a flaky, firm texture that holds the savory shio koji marinade nicely. This Hokke Shio Koji was cooked perfectly... it was smoky, flaky, and rich in umami. A comforting lunch set with spicy powder on the gohan, small serving of cawan mushi & tamago roll with the usual side of miso soup. The set came out to be a very enjoyable quality japanese lunch. Personally, I highly prefer Ootoya’s traditional & comforting everyday japanese home-cooked style approach. It shares a very similar vibe and culinary philosophy to some local authentic Japanese favorites at a certain industrial city east of Jakarta (Cikarang), which favor authentic, unpretentious and deeply satisfying grilled or simmered dishes over flashy fusion sushi.

Had the Saba Shioyaki Set at Ootoya Lotte Shopping Avenue and it was a very satisfying meal overall. The saba was grilled really well with crispy skin and tender, flavorful meat inside. The seasoning was simple but done perfectly, allowing the natural richness of the fish to stand out without being overpowering. Paired with the rice, soup, and side dishes, the set felt balanced, comforting, and very authentic to Japanese homestyle dining. I was also happy to see that the portion sizes were generous and consistent. Sometimes there can be concerns about portions varying between branches, but this visit definitely met expectations and left me feeling fully satisfied. The ambiance was clean, cozy, and relaxing despite being located inside a busy mall. It has a calm Japanese-style atmosphere that makes dining there feel comfortable and enjoyable. Service was attentive and efficient as well. The staff were polite, responsive, and everything was served smoothly and in a timely manner. Overall, a great dining experience with quality food, reliable portions, and good service. Definitely one of the places I’d return to for a comforting Japanese set.

Tried the Wagyu Hamburg Demi Glazed at Ootoya — juicy, flavorful, and perfectly paired with the rich demi-glace sauce. The wagyu was tender with a nice balance of sweetness and savory depth. Comforting Japanese-style hamburg done right.
