Bubur Ayam Barito sits beside a cemetery wall in South Jakarta, with tables squeezed into a stretch of pavement. The place is cramped in the way old Jakarta food spots often are, where diners lean into strangers, motorcycles brush past elbows, and everyone silently agrees that personal space is a luxury for another neighbourhood. Ants crawl along the walls, cigarette smoke drifts through the air, and traffic rattles beside the tables. None of this seems to bother anybody. The stall has been around since 1992 and survived long enough to become part of the city’s mythology. Kids who ate here back in the day now bring their own kids. Even after the government tore up much of the Barito pavement during the recent revitalisation project, Pak Agus kept serving bowls of porridge. Some say he serves up to a thousand bowls a day. Loyal customers now eat in cars, perch along narrow walkways, or hover around tables, waiting for someone to give up a seat. Jakarta may change every few years, but places like this hang on through pure stubbornness. The porridge arrives thick, dense, and dangerously hot, the kind of heat that punishes impatient people. Underneath sits the famous soft egg yolk that melts into the rice and turns the whole thing rich and silky. The chicken comes in generous chunks. Then there are the cheese sticks, which sound absurd until they land in the bowl and somehow make complete sense. What makes Barito work is that the flavour already carries itself before soy sauce, pepper, or chilli even enter the conversation. The porridge is savoury without becoming heavy, simple without tasting plain. Satay is on the menu too, mainly chicken intestine and liver. It’s not the reason people come here. One person said it was hard and tough, like old leftovers being warmed up again. Customers insist the taste has remained untouched for decades, while others complain that age and popularity have softened the magic a little. That happens to every legendary food stall eventually. At some point people stop comparing the meal to other porridge and start comparing it to their own memories. Service moves quickly despite everything. The staff navigate crowds, parked cars, and impatient customers with surprising calm, delivering bowls through impossibly tight spaces while trying to spot whoever waved first. The whole operation feels slightly improvised, depending on traffic, weather, and luck. The place is part of the experience whether anyone admits it or not. Eating hot porridge beside a cemetery while Jakarta traffic crawls past feels oddly fitting. It’s messy, loud, overheated, and occasionally uncomfortable. Some people mention cockroaches, which explains why many eat in their cars. Still, people keep coming back because the porridge delivers the thing all legendary street food does: comfort over presentation.

A legendary chicken porridge spot in Jakarta and a mandatory visit when you’re in the city. The taste is rich, savory, and truly comforting. Highly recommended to order the complete bowl with egg for the best experience!

The porridge is savory, the taste is indeed different from other porridge. Eating one bowl already makes me full in my opinion. I first tried it with a raw egg placed in the bottom of the bowl, so it wasn't fishy and cooked by itself. If it's not enough, the cheese sticks are sold separately. Don't forget to request the satay when ordering, because it's only available near the stall and isn't offered. The portion of the satay is long, I felt satisfied only for one skewer. I came here when it just opened on a weekday, so it wasn't crowded and got a seat. its location on the side of the road, lined with other food stalls. You can park on the side of the road.

The congee was super delicious, for the price the portion was huge. A lot of people seem to eat here at night, at first it was weird because I'm used to eating congee for breakfast but turns out congee in the middle of the night is really good

Good food, good mood! Bubur Barito as its best! Can’t help with the taste, kindly eat as soon as the porridge has already landed in front of your eyes 😋 eat while it’s warm. Also, the toppings such as cheese sticks, cakwe, and the others are really tempting
