Kiong hi! 🐎🔥 May the Year of the Fire Horse bring us blessings, steady health, and the strength to move forward. Today, I visited Gedung Candra Naya, a cultural heritage site and historic building that once served as the residence of Khouw Kim An, who held the title of Major China in 19th-century Batavia. The building stands as a witness to the role of the Chinese community in Jakarta’s history. The atmosphere is solemn yet welcoming. Reserved, yet layered with (hi)stories. My favorite spot is the sheltered area near the koi pond, where light, water, and old walls seem to coexist in harmony. You can order a cup of coffee here at @candranayacoffee and take in a small respite of stillness, right in the middle of towering modern buildings.
View on GoogleThe building is well maintained, clean and pretty, especially the view of the pond. But it is so small so there is not much thing to explore. The sad part is also you are not allowed to use professional camera inside and around the building. The location is right beside Novotel so it is reachable. Just to keep in mind, if you want to go to or from Chinatown glodok, it takes you 10 minutes by walking. I visited during weekday so it was only me and my family who were there. And it is totally free to visit. You just need to fill in the guest book.
View on GoogleGedung Chandra Naya is one of the rare heritage sites in Jakarta that still showcases the history of Chinese-Indonesian culture. The architecture is unique, with traditional Chinese elements beautifully blended with colonial influences, making it a fascinating spot for anyone interested in history or photography. Walking around the courtyard gives you a glimpse of how life might have been in the past, and it is a reminder of Jakarta’s rich multicultural roots. Unfortunately, the building is now surrounded by modern commercial developments, so the atmosphere is not as authentic as it could be, and it sometimes feels overshadowed by the newer structures. Still, the preservation of this building is valuable, and it’s definitely worth visiting if you want to explore Jakarta beyond the malls and high-rises. Hopefully, more attention will be given to maintaining and promoting this cultural landmark so future generations can continue to appreciate its importance.
