We visited Mama's Warung today for lunch because it was close to our hotel. The service was lacklustre to start things off. I ordered the Ayam Goreng (fried chicken with chips), thinking it would be freshly fried for both but received chicken pieces that were soggy and not fried at all and the chips were lukewarm and soft (see photo). When I asked the server if I had received the correct order, she informed me that it was how Ayam Goreng was made here. Unfortunately I google imaged what the dish was supposed to look like after I had left and realised that it was not up to standard. I would recommend not ordering the same dish here. There are many better quality restaurants in Ubud.
View on GoogleI don’t care where you are in the world right now—you need to get to Ubud, find Mama’s Warung, and order the Tofu and Tempeh Sambal Matah. As a vegetarian, I’m always on the hunt for standout dishes, and this is quite literally the best thing I’ve eaten. I actually cannot stop thinking about it. The flavors were balanced perfectly—the freshness of the lemongrass and shallots paired with the protein was incredible. My only "critique" (and it’s more of a personal preference than a criticism) is that I would have loved even more chili for an extra kick, but the flavor profile as it stands is flawless. If you are in Bali, this is a non-negotiable stop. Best meal in Ubud by far!
View on GoogleA charming, homey atmosphere in this family-run warung made us feel welcome right away. The staff were incredibly attentive, and both the food and drinks were absolutely delicious—we were even treated to an extra smoothie, which was a lovely surprise. We found ourselves coming back every evening, and honestly, there isn’t a single negative thing I could point out.
View on GoogleMama herself even came out to say hi and hang out. She’s amazing, the whole staff is so sweet and I’ll be dreaming of this Ayam sambal matah forever. Already here again second night in a row. If you’re in a group where someone doesn’t want authentic Indonesian dishes (why are you even friends?), but if that happens don’t stress, you can all be happy here. Mama’s also makes tacos, quesadillas, Chinese and Japanese inspired things.
View on GoogleVisited on Thursday afternoon and ordered the gado gado (45K IDR). Good sized portion with a variety of ingredients. They gave a good amount of peanut paste too, more than other places I have tried in Ubud. I love the sauces for gado gado gado so the more the merrier. There were 2 other customers but they needed time to prepare the food so do check with them if you are pressed for time. There are tables at the front (along the road) and tables in the courtyard which are in a quieter and more serene space.
