This is a small island set along the Pearl river, around half an hour walk west from the Canton tower. It's one of very few historic places in this huge megapolis and we found it very interesting. It dates back to mid 19c when after the second Opium war France and Britain occupied this piece of land settling there. They established their government offices, residential buildings, consulates, nice parks and alleys - all in European style, as well two Cathedrals. The area is in total contrast with the rest of the city and it was quite interesting to feel different atmosphere after two weeks exploring China. There are many cafes and restaurants around so you can sit and enjoy this calm atmosphere away from Canton hassle
View on GoogleShamian Island Shamian Island (沙面岛) is a peaceful and picturesque destination in Guangzhou, known for its rich colonial history and elegant European-style architecture. Once a foreign concession during the 19th century, the island still preserves beautifully restored buildings influenced by British and French designs. Tree-lined streets, quiet lanes, and charming old mansions create a peaceful atmosphere that feels far removed from the busy city. Walking around the island, visitors can admire historical landmarks, churches, and former consulates, each telling stories of Guangzhou’s past as a trading port. The area is also popular for photography, thanks to its scenic river views, vintage buildings, and lush greenery. Cafés and small restaurants add to its relaxed charm, making it a great place to unwind. Shamian Island is especially pleasant in the early morning or late afternoon when the sunlight filters through the trees, casting soft shadows on the colonial facades. Whether you are interested in history, architecture, or simply a quiet escape, Shamian Island offers a unique and memorable experience in Guangzhou.
View on GoogleSmall touristy island on its own with colonial style buildings - so diff from the rest of Guangzhou. Quite a nice place to chill and explore but can be rather crowded. Many nice cafes to chill! Can spend easily half a day with a coffee break here. Many come for the Harry Potter Starbucks I believe!

View on GoogleA nice park to stroll & have a look at beautiful architecture. Shamian Island is a tranquil, tree-lined pedestrian area in Guangzhou's Liwan District, known for its well-preserved European colonial architecture from the 19th-century British and French concession era. It is a popular spot for strolling, photography, and viewing historic mansions, a Catholic chapel, and the White Swan Hotel. Divided into British and French concessions in 1859, the island was a hub for foreign trading companies.Features over 100 historical buildings, including grand mansions, banks, and churches, with over 100 trees, some over 300 years old. A "pedestrian-only" oasis with a slow-paced, European feel that contrasts with the bustling pace of Guangzhou
